There’s been some significant debate raging in BroBomb world. Ever since Matt sent around the link to Pursuit of Happiness, we’ve been going back and forth with ideas on how to bring this vibe to a ski edit. Could it be done on any interesting ski trail at night? Would it require a fantasyland combination of downhill urban landscape and snow covered streets? Are there creative ways to bridge that gap?
I’ve got a fridge packed with beer and grillable meats, so it’s your turn to write some BroBomb content. Drop your ideas, responses, hate, and knock-knock jokes in the comments. Consider this collective therapy to get the young skiing community used to posting on something other than NS.

What is a “frig”, son?
I control your comments: Damn you and your proper slang spellings.
I have a strong opinion about this kind of thing, as in, why are we trying to compare our sport, to every other sport. The fundamental difference between what we do, and what this video represents is the lack of freedom we have as skiers. From our feet, to our need for snow, or snowlike substances to, ahem, GTS.
The first thing I thought of was robotfood at night. But again, not skiing. i mean, basically the same idea, but not the same.
WHy do we have to “be like” or catch up with other genres of sports that evolve within themselves. Why can’t we just go our own way? Skiers are serious by nature, it will probably take time to change that. I have a million ideas for neet things to do in my own city, but have neither the time, or patience to go out and do them. Plus waiting for snow, finding a suitable level of diversity in the level values of the land in front of me, can I even get buddies to come out and be on the same page when we want to shoot.
the beuty of skate edits in any form is that you dont need much. just your skate(s)(board) and a camera. between now and next month you can change venues, styles, or processes to make something unique. This isnt the case on skis, or even on a snowboard. It just isnt. (imo)
One thing I will say, one thing that can change in a hurry, is how we look at things. Sometimes you don’t have to innovate or have 84 banger tricks, you just gotta have fun, and make the watcher have fun watching.
but since were all so serious all the time, good luck with that everyone who tries. lol
thank god for chug.
I watch plenty of edits of both skiing and skating, and i think you guys still have the monopoly on ‘hey we’re just having fun’ edits. Skating has been pretty serious for a while now but it’s starting to lighten up. You just keep doing what you’re doing.
I feel like this videos carry the same kind of vibe:
http://vimeo.com/7606081
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzdzrYUg2x0
after some thought I feel that what makes these two videos work is this: they are completely accessible to the masses. it’s hard for me to explain, but so many of the ‘just for fun,’ edits are totally inaccessible. frankly, they look like they are trying way too freakin hard to have ‘fun’ for the edit. few edits simply show people just skiing the way most of the time on skis is spent. i would like to see more edits like this, post them if you find them. lets see more edits that make us excited to just go ski or board without trying to do something funky off a bump or tree.
I feel as though this would go good with a slowmo edit. Or just a super smooth edit that flows perfectly.
Having this in an edit with some “gangster”, gang sign filled edit would be disaster.
For me, the most important thing in an edit is matching the skiing style and music style. Pow edits with hip hop are often disastrous, as are thug edits with chilled reggae or techno.
The reason I Feel GHood and Still GHood work so well is that the smooth style and slowmo is matched by a slow, thoughtful track.
This track would need a slow, technical edit, with lots of tech rail tricks. Also something kind of trippy, maybe at night, but with good lighting effects.
“The fundamental difference between what we do, and what this video represents is the lack of freedom we have as skiers.”
Carl, I’m sorry buddy, but its probably time for you to quit skiing.
On the bright side, it’s been an okay-at-best run. You may have taken it too seriously and perhaps you’ll find NOT skiing more “freeing” or “liberating” than skiing.
But, in either case …
Thanks for playing.
Beauty.
Much love and respect to the comment board overlords, btw.
I think this would work super well with a sunset shoot in July on Mt. Hood. Go from just sunset to almost dark. just some nice chill slowmo silhouette shots, nothing super tech, and people chilling around a fire in a barrel. kind of like the end of The Massive or the last WCS4 video. I just don’t feel the urban vibe for this, and the blading edit didn’t quite match the song.
This could also be done with a TC night skiing/Mt. Hood montage. The reason people love TC is because it’s fairly ordinary guys who just live as ski bums and travel around having fun. I think a lot of people would identify with it like they do the series.
but why does everything have to be shots of tricks? the blade edit is cool because it is so low key – that is what makes it work. lets see edits of people just mobbing around the mountain on the groomers.
See? too serious.
@carl…With you most of the way, but Chug? Dude wants to be skiing’s Jackass so bad. Which is pop culture, by way of skateboarding, by way of punk rock.
Everything needs inspiration or influences; it’s how we put them together that makes it cool or sucky.
My idea for achieving this vibe is a bomb run through groomers and park without hitting anything in its originally intended way. So just jumping over rails, tapping blue barrels/lift poles, crap like that. At night, of course.
this would be tight with a night pow edit. those take tons of effort though for every shot.
I like that idea Jeff
The shots are really cool except they skate so similar to figure skaters it makes me giggle
I say more people need to start doing things different rather than just sitting in their armchairs and complaining about it.
I’ve envisioned an inspired edit that involves lots of skiing switch and weaving between gapers.
@barberdude don’t forget to trail your fingers playfully down their sides as you do so.
Also, guess I’m agreeing with p-fo here, but the closest skiing has to edits like this is the TC boys, Wesson, Parry, Compton, Grussell, etc. Preaching to the choir here I think, but everything they put out is just on another level in terms of how much I enjoy watching it. Those tap variations in the Dark Ages edit had me involuntarily smiling, and I don’t get that with double cork blunt 1620s.
Does anyone have any idea what kind of skates they are using in this video?
I think they’re Valo skates http://www.valo-brand.com
Not sure what model though.
thanks
At 2:07 they do a doubles figure skating move. And I turned it off.
