Soundtrack Intervention

sunny intervention

BroBomb: Come in; come in. Take a seat anywhere you’d like.

Ski Community: What’s going on here?

Just remember you’re surrounded by people who care for you and want the best for your life.

IS THIS AN INTERVENTION!?!?

Yes, just sit down and listen to what we have to say. We have gone through the pain of listening to your terrible music in edits and movies for years and years. It’s gotten to the point where it’s destructive.

NO, I’m out of here! (BroBomb grabs a handful of tall-T and wrestles the confused giant back to the couch)

Listen! You have to hear this. Ok, we care for you deeply, but your addiction to crappy, overused music has gone on long enough. It all started years ago when we had to hear Swollen Members in every soundtrack, then when we thought there was hope, you began using your friends…Tired Eyes, Son Real, All-Star, etc. At this point we realized that denial would not solve this problem.

Now your friend Newschoolers hasn’t helped over the years; he’s been an enabler.  We didn’t warn you early enough about that toxic relationship. He introduced you to Biggie and MGMT and you’ve been hooked on their tracks ever since.  We plead with you to stop solely getting your musical highs from Newschoolers.

Finally, as we watched Rastafarian culture and Cali P become the gateway drug to Dubstep, we knew it was time to step in. Please get help.  There are resources out there that would love to help like Pitchfork, SPIN, Paste, and now us. We’re going to keep you accountable and provide some help on a regular basis. Will you make the change?

I’ll try! Thanks for being there…you’re a true Bro!

[End scene, and roaring applause!]

Below is our first set of songs we recommend for your next edit/webisode/movie. Use them sparingly and come back for more, as the Soundtrack Intervention will continue all season long.

The Drums: Let’s Go Surfing

All last season I planned to use this song in a fun powder edit, but I realized I don’t get to ski powder much in the East.  Just imagine seeing pow butters, pillow slashes, and just carefree cruising to this post-punk meets Beach Boys sound.

Twin Shadow: Castles in the Snow

We all know skiing park looks great with some electronic music or a new wave 80s sound, but we all know the same songs get used over and over again; e.g. MGMT and Justice.  Give Twin Shadow a try for your next smooth park edit and then get the album Forget because it’s my favorite album of 2010.

The Strokes: Hard To Explain

Apparently The Strokes are back together and have new album slated for spring 2011.  So, be the first to use The Strokes in an edit and don’t be late to the revival.  This track would work best in one of those “fun” park edits full of taps, spread eagles, and cigarettes.

This has my approval. A lot of it.

  2. TurboAsFuck says:

amazing how late the ski community is on music in this day and age. so much good music out there and so easily accessible, you would think someone working in a creative field wouldnt be so quick to attach the same boring $hit to their edit, that five other edits used. As for rap ill be happy to never hear another “banger” edit accompanied by a biggie x ratatat mashup. OF, Das Racist are some of the more recent acts that come to mind that i’d be shocked if they werent in some edits this season. Those guys are least interesting and relevant though.

  3. Mountain Man says:

Thank you for finally saying what i have been feeling for years. And good choices on your music selections, there is alot better music out there for edits other than Zion I and whatever Rastafarian music T Hall is obsessed with.

  4. TurboAsFuck says:

and you can hate me all you want for many reasons but dont hate me or kanye west for putting together one of the best damn hip hop albums ever in Dark Fantasy….$hit is amazing. Give that @sshole the credit he deserves for being an amazing artist/musician.

  5. TurboAsFuck says:

agreed Valley.Ian Compton does a great job of music selection and making his edits personal and easy to relate to…at least in my opinion.

  6. brody says:

what a hilarious way of presenting this. i love it.

  7. uhhh says:

youre kidding right? How does this change anything? These three songs sound just like the soundtrack to skiing the last 3 years. Ok Ill give the strokes a pass, but come one, is there nothing better than this on your ipods? I am totally not saying my playlists are universally earthsmashingly good, but there is other shit out there that can make for some good up or down tempo edits.

    heres some: Kokayi: Ninty 5
Rev Glock (jailhouse version) BUmpy knuckles
    Amazing, Das Racist
    Cobra Skulls, grave yard
    or
cobra skulls, hasta los cobra skulls siempre
    fischerspooner, cloud
anything from just a bands “we are” ep
    sushi, kyle andrews
    recognize, the lox
    and just for fun…
dont be on with her, by Miami horror.

    OFWGKTA

  9. ONE1 says:

Its true, your additions didnt do shit. We need some fucking real punk rock back in ski movies

  10. barberdude says:

    @uhhh and ONE1,

A true intervention takes more then one session. It takes a long time to stop an addiction so if you noticed we agreed to conduct this intervention series all season long.

Yes three songs don’t change everything or anything, but neither do long lists because no one pays attention to them.

  11. Ian Houghton says:

This needed to be said, and said VERY LOUDLY.

  12. Nugs says:

Go watch an Absinthe shred movie and get some inspiration there. Your lists sucks

  13. thesheik says:

please do not tell people to go to pitchfork.

  14. jaff0045 says:

    word, but that list is….

how about some classic shit that isn’t overused. bob dylans great, but there are enough gypsy edits w/ that.

how about some thrashing blues jimi hendrix, no not hey joe, and fucking purple haze
how about some soul music from the 50′s?
how about some 90′s hip hop that doesn’t suck?
how about some old time dub reggae, i got a thread started over on that one website w/ some good stuff
    http://www.newschoolers.com/ns/forums/readthread/thread_id/579831/

  15. Matt says:

So damn true. MSP is the only company with soundtracks I don’t routinely loathe. PBP and Level 1 being the worst offenders, with the exception of about a third of EDIAS.

I suggest the ski industry take some hints from Mountain bike films. Original is good.

  16. Matt says:

Props for the Always Sunny shot by the way. Best show ever.

  17. Dan says:

    I really hope this works

  18. Nick says:

Somebody put some Neil Young to some skiing. Also voxtrot and the smiths. Iron maiden, set your goals and title fight would be sick too.

Cool way to write an article, and I stop watching quite a few edits because they have awful rap or reggae.

  19. Mr.Bishop says:

Wait… so you’re saying you’re going to step in and help people step away from Dubstep and hip-hop… but only by suggesting indie electrend pop?

If you want to pop open the can of worms that is taste in music, I think you’re doing it wrong.

  20. chrasual says:

I love how personally some people took this…

He suggested three songs, not 30… I wonder how many people condemning his picks actually listened to the songs?

Keep your eyes open for more recommendations…ranging from subtly different from what’s being used today (Twin Shadow for example), to vastly differently.

I think what Matt was saying is that some of the “conventions/leanings” of ski soundtrack makers are perfectly fine, good even, but that there’s an unfortunate tendency of go to the same old wells, far too often.

There’s no excuse for pro film crews to reuse songs already used by another pro film crew, or to use 3 or 4 songs by the same artist in 2 years. And, it’s not just the handful of pro movie makers, it’s the slew of pro/am edits that come out every year. Off the top of anyone’s head, how many times did you hear the Chitty Bang remix of Kids in an edit this past season?

Bottom line: Agree with his personal tastes or not, anyone who’s defending the soundtracks of the most prominent ski flicks and the average edit of the last decade has shitty music taste. There are exceptions, however they’re mostly made by Ostness or Scott Klumb.

  21. TheFuzz says:

I really appreciated the Pitchfork reference. I feel like The National is an untapped resource of edit music.. And I’d really appreciate a solid edit working with a Neutral Milk Hotel track. I hope you indie kids working over at BroBomb can appreciate this.

  22. DP MacIntyre says:

This is so painfully obvious. Nice Always Sunny approach. I love red wine in an empty soda can.

Honestly, if anyone downloaded pitchfork’s top 100 songs of the year and just picked songs at random I’m sure they’d come up with a better play list.

Twin Shadow is pretty rad. The strokes will be classic for generations to come.

  23. One1 says:

^If you picked a top 100 song from pitchfork randomly you would probably get a track from beyonce ,gucci mane ,or a diplo remix.

This is a lost cause..lets stick with cali-p

  24. Rogge says:

    1. There’s edits from AllStar other than two original season recaps?
    2. The Meatheads have always had the best soundtrack in skiing until Eric Pollard learned music rights don’t need to be obtained for free online ski movies.
    3. Stept’s NetWork
    4. Jon only used this intervention because he loves the show “its always sunny in philadelphia.”
    5. Matt Barber loves Line. Ryan Dunfee loves SASS. Jon Harley loves cigarettes.

  25. Niko Woodwarski says:

Is it too much to ask to hear some Ted Nugent or Molly Hatchet every once in awhile? I’m too white for this shit!
