Snow Melts, Gapers Go Home

Last week, on an unseasonably warm February day, I was standing in my backyard watching my dog run around. My neighbor came outside and started up the usual tiny talk about the warm weather. The backyard, which had been snow-covered pretty continuously since Christmas, was a muddy mess. Looking at the brownish, melted remnants, he made the comment that I’ve come to expect every year, “So, I guess it was a pretty short ski season for you, huh?” I smiled, and knowing that he wasn’t going to understand or even care about my answer, I just said, “No, they have much more snow up there.”

Quick Hitter from Jay Peak

The east coast got stuck in a steady melt cycle, but last week Jay Peak broke the trend with two feet of fresh. Spring temps quickly returned, but Jay got the lifts turning for one final weekend. Dan and Dunfee converged on Jay for a mudtacular good time.

Steve Wright made the mistake of giving me lift tickets and a condo for Jay’s final weekend.  With the intent of burning our bridges as soon as they’re built, BroBomb set out to wreck the place.  We did some laundry.

What’s So Great About Spring?

Like any seasonal sport, there’s a certain ebb and flow to the media coverage of skiing. Articles about the earliest resorts to open are inevitable in the fall, and it’s impossible to avoid the ‘summer camps’ issues of all your major mags on the newsstands in February. Spring is another major tick on the clock of the ski year. Freeski mags and sites probably don’t go for the obligatory “bikinis and hero snow” article as often as a mainstream mag, but it’s still there in spirit. I could write one of those, but I’m sure the serious journalists over at SKIING have beaten me to it.
